Unpacking my Television: Towards a Hypertextual Dissertation [1997, rptd. 2008]

David Thomson

Abstract

This paper argues that hypertext presents new possibilities for Ph.D. dissertations. By enabling the writer to incorporate other forms of digitized media such as audio clips, photographs, and video, hypertext expands the range of material that can be integrated in a thesis. Hypertext links within a document permit non-linear navigation through a dissertation's contents, while network-accessible theses can provide links to unlimited amounts of primary or secondary research material located elsewhere on a network. The paper demonstrates some of the principles of hypertext at work within a dissertation, and reports on related developments on this topic.
